DescriptionOn 19 June 1944, in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, the Japanese aircraft carrier sank some six and a half hours after suffering a single torpedo hit from the US submarine USS Albacore. A combination of the torpedo hit along with a pair of explosions that resulted from design flaws and poor damage control procedures doomed the ship.
