DescriptionThe ironclad sank on her maiden voyage in a collision with the ironclad SMS König Wilhelm. The two ships, along with SMS Preussen were steaming in the English Channel on 31 May 1878 when they encountered a group of fishing boats and, in turning to avoid them, Grosser Kurfürst inadvertently crossed too closely to König Wilhelm.
