RMS Laconia



DescriptionOn 12 September 1942, 130 mi (210 km) north-northeast of Ascension Island, Laconia was hit and sunk by a torpedo fired by U-156. The U-boat commander realized that Italian prisoners were among the ship's passengers and ordered a rescue effort that came to be called the Laconia incident. This also led to Germany's Laconia Order regarding assistance to the survivors of sinking ships. In all an estimated 1,649 persons were killed.
