RMS Empress of Canada



DescriptionOn 13 March 1943 the British troopship Empress of Canada, en route from Durban, South Africa to Takoradi carrying Italian prisoners of war along with Polish and Greek refugees, was torpedoed and sunk by the Italian submarine Leonardo da Vinci about 400 nautical miles (740 km) south of Cape Palmas off the coast of Africa. Of about 1,800 people aboard 392 were killed. Nearly half of the deaths reported were Italian prisoners.
