DescriptionThe French 118-gun Océan-class ship of the line was flagship of the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile in August 1798. She came under fire from five British ships, caught fire and exploded when her magazines detonated. The number of casualties has been disputed with the British reporting 70 survivors. Her crew was far from complete at the time, and a number of survivors may have been rescued by French ships. Contre-amiral Denis Decrès reported 760 survivors.
