DescriptionOn 19 February 1942, in the Bombing of Darwin, Japanese bombs dropped on the cargo ship Neptuna exploded in the ship's saloon and engine room. 45 men were killed aboard including nine wharf labourers and 36 crew. Many others were seriously injured and the ship was set afire. As the crew prepared to abandon ship 100 depth charges, that were being unloaded, exploded showering the harbour with debris along with sending flames and smoke 100 metres into the air.
