HMHS Glenart Castle

DescriptionOn 26 February 1918 the hospital ship HMHS Glenart Castle was hit and sunk by a torpedo from UC-56. Evidence suggested the submarine crew may have shot at initial survivors of the sinking in an effort to cover up the sinking. The body of one of her junior officers, recovered from the sea near where she sank, had two gunshot wounds. His body also wore a life vest indicating he was shot while trying to abandon ship. Few survivors were reported; 162 people were killed.
