DescriptionOn 6 August 1859 the passenger steamship was wrecked on a submerged reef off Carpenter Rocks, southwest of Mount Gambier, South Australia. Survivors clung to the wreck for over a week and many people took days to die within sight of land and saw successive rescue attempts fail. Of 113 people aboard there were 24 survivors, including only one woman, Bridget Ledwith. Of 89 dead, 14 were children.
